What Gear Do I Need to Start CrossFit ?

What kind of gear do you need to start CrossFit? To be honest, not very much. If you have workout clothes, a pair of shoes, and a water bottle you are good to go!

However, there are a couple of items that are worth purchasing after you know CrossFit is going to be your thing. The first is CrossFit shoes. These are your foundation for every WOD (Workout of the Day). Look for a pair with a flat, grippy sole for lifting, but also enough cushioning for cardio. Brands like Reebok and Nike have some great options. These are different from the kind of shoes you wear for running and other sports because they offer greater stability.

Now, let’s talk threads. Comfort is key in the CrossFit world. So, grab some moisture-wicking, breathable workout clothes. Shorts, tights, or leggings, paired with a moisture-wicking top, are the usual suspects. At the end of the day, its going to get hot no matter what, but decent workout clothes can make you a bit more comfortable. Those are the basics and then as you get more into CrossFit there are a couple of other items you might like to get.

Not everyone wears them, but a lot of people do. Grips or gloves can save your palms from turning into a battlefield of blisters. You’ll appreciate the better grip and reduced friction when you’re doing anything on the bar. Some people also like the little barehand gloves which you can also use when you’re lifting.

If you’re getting into heavy lifting, a weightlifting belt can be your best friend. It provides extra support for movements like squats and deadlifts. Not essential if you’re just starting, but keep it in mind as you progress. Its one of those things that is individual, not everyone has these and not everyone likes them, but there are other people who really do.

CrossFit loves its jump ropes, especially for double-unders. The gym lets you borrow one, so you don’t have to buy one at all, but some members like to buy their own. If you decide to get your own, invest in a good quality one with an adjustable length.

Knee sleeves are your knees’ best pals when things get heavy. They offer support and warmth during high-rep squats and heavy lifts, preventing injuries and giving you extra stability. Again, not everyone wears them but lots of people like the extra support they provide.

Wrist wraps are another neat addition. They keep your wrists in line during movements like overhead presses, handstands, and front squats. No more wrist strain.

Remember, you don’t need to go all out at once. Start with the basics, like comfy shoes and workout clothes, and add the rest as you go along – if it is something you feel like you want. Your CrossFit journey is personal, and your gear should match your goals and needs. So, let’s gear up and conquer those WODs!
